Rachael Horovitz. Cornelia Foss. Albert Maysles.

Noguchi Museum, May 2010

I dug this one up because each of them have been inspiring me a lot lately. I have been photographing Daniel Johnston for a few years now and friends are always curious as to what’s happening with all of these thousands of photographs and my consistent trips out to photograph him some more. The other night Rachael asked me, “so as a photographer, how do you know when to stop?” I replied, “I don’t. I really don’t know when to stop or if I’ll ever want to stop.” She smiled and began telling me about this Life Magazine photographer who just couldn’t stop photographing this one place for years and years and that, “thank goodness for us that he didn’t stop..” Her comment really touched me. I think for a photographer, that is the ultimate compliment.

On another recent day, after mentioning how I only gave painting a try for the first time a few months ago, Cornelia generously invited me to attend her painting class at the National Academy Museum & School. It sort of rebooted this idea in my head (that used to be more prominant when I was a freshman at Parsons School of Design) that anything is possible. Want to do xyz? Then go do xyz. Live a lot. How about that? I’ve forgotten that. I can’t forget that.
