WILLEM de KOONING

Retrospective, MoMA

.

If there is one exhibition you see this year, it should definitely be the Willem de Kooning retrospective at MoMA. I was lucky enough to attend the opening reception tonight consisting of the de Kooning family, friends and lenders of the 200 pieces on display. We had 3 hours to roam the sixth floor which was entirely dedicated to de Kooning paintings and drawings ranging from his work created during his school days to his famous “Woman” series.

.

I was overwhelmed by the work especially because in the last 30 minutes of the opening the rooms were empty and I stood there in silence surrounded by them. I can imagine that this is the rare moment only curators get to experience at such shows. To be able to really absorb each piece without feeling as though I need to move with the viewing crowd made the experience incredible.

.

I urge you. GO SEE THIS SHOW. Because the quality and quantity of work here is UNBELIEVABLE.
